My wife often says, “we do things when we do them.” On that note, I am excited to share another property with you after a brief (or not so brief) hiatus from Stay Indie. My plan is to share a new property with you every other week going forward. Many thanks to all who have reached out to share messages of enjoyment and words of encouragement for continuing Stay Indie.
El Rey Court, an iconic adobe motor court built in the 1930s, sits alongside one of the original highways in the United States, old Route 66.
Since being built, the property has only had four owners. The latest owners, Jeff Burns and his Brooklyn-based partner, Matt Comfort, purchased the property in 2018. They then enlisted the help of Alison and Jay Carroll, a creative couple who led the redesign and rebranding overhaul for the 86-room hotel.
"We want this to be a place where locals and travelers of all ages can congregate, intermix, and share a great experience together." - Jay Carroll
There is no shortage of space to spread out and unwind at El Rey Court - the property boasts 5 lush acres of old growth gardens. After enjoying the grounds, you can grab a seat at the local watering hole, La Reina, a mezcal + tequila-focused bar on the property.

Disclaimer: I share properties that appeal to me based on design, history and a sense of place. I haven’t had the chance to visit every property that I share in this newsletter. My hope is that you will discover new places that you want to visit and experience.
